OCLC has updated and unified information about CONTENTdm in one location —the OCLC Web site: www.oclc.org/contentdm.

The OCLC site now includes the Featured Collections, news, articles and reviews, information about options and ordering, and other general product information. Regional sites will be localized and updated in the coming months.

To directly access the User Support Center, you will still use www.contentdm.com. By early July, the home page for www.contentdm.com will be redesigned to include OCLC branding and will serve as the primary location for the CONTENTdm User Support Center, with more direct access to log in.

Introducing new options that are now available through OCLC’s Bibliographic Record Snapshot.

In addition to providing OCLC-MARC records and local data, Bibliographic Record Snapshot can now output Institution Record (IR) activity and SCIPIO activity.

For more information about Bibliographic Record Snapshot visit http://www.oclc.org/us/en/batchprocessing/options/database/default.htm

To order Bibliographic Record Snapshot use the online order form located at: http://bibsnap.oclc.org/bibsnap/

The password requirements for libraries that use EDX/FTP to send and/or retrieve files using the ftp address edx.oclc.org have been changed.

The password minimum length has been increased from 4 to 6 characters.  A minimum of at least one alphabetic or national character (A-Z, #, $ or @) and one numeric character (0-9) has been enforced.

All passwords are confidential to the library and are not tracked or maintained by OCLC.  Some libraries have chosen to maintain their password manually while others use an automatic script to create a new password before the 90 day expiration period.

OCLC is pleased to announce that records from both Erasmus Boekhandel BV (OCLC symbol ERASA) and Librairie Erasmus (OCLC symbol ERASP) are now being added to WorldCat.

Based in Amsterdam, Erasmus Boekhandel provides a wide range of library oriented services to academic and research libraries throughout the world.  These include a New Title Service, Approval Plans, EDI, MARC records and a specialized Standing Order Department. Technical services are tailored according to the needs of each library.  (Web site at: http://www.erasmusbooks.nl/)

Located in the center of Paris, Librairie Erasmus supplies books and journals from France and French-speaking Switzerland to academic and research libraries throughout the world.  Bibliographic information for new and forthcoming scholarly publications is provided through the New Titles Service.  Additional services include Approval Plans, EDI, Standing Orders and MARC records.  (Web site at: http://www.erasmus.fr/)

MARC records are matched to existing titles in WorldCat or added to WorldCat if there is no matching record.  The original records are cataloged in English and are added at Encoding level M, meaning that any library with a full level cataloging authorization may upgrade the original records.  Some sample records from each site are:

Erasmus Boekhandel matches: #174500580, #191659435
Erasmus Boekhandel new records: #228443552, #228443689
Librairie Erasmus matches: #186461469, #190965820
Librairie Erasmus new records: #228425263, #228425312

On Sunday, June 1, 2008 OCLC implemented changes related to the OCLC-MARC Update 2008 in Connexion browser and client.  These changes are based on MARC 21 Bibliographic, Authority, and Holdings Formats, Updates No. 7 (dated October 2006), MARC Code List changes and additions and a few changes suggested by users and OCLC staff.  For complete details, see OCLC Technical Bulletin 255 at http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/worldcat/tb/255/default.htm.

Changes include, but are not limited to:
–Addition of codes from the IAML list of musical composition codes in 047.
–Addition of $j (Relator term) in 111, 611, 711 and 811.
–Addition of 034 (Coded Cartographic Mathematical Data) in Authorities.
–Addition of field 506 (Restrictions on Access Note) in Holdings records.
–New country (Ctry) and geographic area (field 043) codes for Kosovo.
–New bibliographic indexes: Language of Cataloging Description (040 $b) and Access Restrictions (506 $a and $f).
–New authority index: Cartographic Data index (034 $d, $e, $f, $g and $z).

Ability to search codes from the IAML list of musical composition codes in 047 $a in both Connexion browser and client will be available later in 2008.

New indexes and codes will be available in Connexion client dropdowns when the next version of the client is released.  In client 2.10, new indexes may be searched manually in the command line and new codes may be entered manually.

In order to help catalogers more readily identify the history of personal names previously on undifferentiated authority records and subsequently established as a separate authority record, beginning on June 1 the Connexion LCCN authority index will retrieve records containing LCCNs found in the 667 field in authority records.  The goal of this indexing change is to enable users to more easily identify changes made to personal names using unique control numbers.

With the June 1 Connexion install, LCCNs found in the 667 fields of newly added and changed authority records are included in the Connexion LCCN index.  This was accomplished by using changes made to the LCCN indexing functionality to scan the 667 field for the word: “Undifferentiated” (allowing for both upper and lower case).  If the word “undifferentiated” is identified in a 667 field, the software will then look for an LCCN in the 667 field and updates applied to the LCCN index.  An example of the indexing changes can be seen using LCCN no95033823.

Records containing LCCNs in 667 fields will automatically be included in all LCCN retrieval results and cannot be excluded when searching.  Please note, no textual data from the 667 field is indexed, rather, the word ‘undifferentiated’ is only used by internal processes to identify candidate records.

No verification was done between LCCNs found in 667 fields and the 010 fields; if an LCCN in a 667 field contains a typographical error, please feel free to contact OCLC’s Quality Control staff (authfile@oclc.org) requesting corrective action.

SEARCHING

The same searching guidelines are applicable to searching LCCNs in 667 fields that are noted for searching LCCNs found in 010 fields.  These are:

  • Type year portion (2 or 4 digits) and control number, with or without the hyphen.
  • Leading zeros in the control number portion are optional.
  • Alphabetic prefix is optional to increase precision.

    78-5201 or 785201
    2001-12345 or 200112345
    82-000012 or 82000012
    82-12 or 8212
    n85-204041 or n85204041
    sh85-61704 or sh8561704

INPUTTING 667 fields

Because the 667 field is a text field, it would be helpful to ensure the following formatting was employed when adding LCCNs in 667 fields.

  • Type year portion (2 or 4 digits) and control number, with no hyphen.
  • n  85204041 (two digit year + 1 character prefix: add two spaces following the ‘n’ prefix)
  • nr 99012578 (two digit year + 2 character prefix: add one space following the ‘nr’ prefix)
  • no2007016671 (four digit year + 2 character prefix: add zero spaces following the ‘no’ prefix)
  • n 2005035179 (four digit year + 1 character prefix: add one space following the ‘n’ prefix)

The Library of Congress recently announced a change in policy about adding death dates to personal name heading and a revision to the LCRI for AACR2 rule 22.17 that allows the option for catalogers to add death dates to personal name headings with open dates http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcri22_17imp.html.

Both the Library of Congress and OCLC are aware that many libraries will be very interested in incorporating these changes into their catalogs.  Libraries that use authority control services for ongoing processing will receive these changes as part of their normal workflows but, for other libraries, OCLC is providing this service to announce headings to which death dates have been added.

Lists for each week since the new policy went into effect on February 1 are available via this feed or at http://www.oclc.org/rss/feeds/authorityrecords/default.htm

A list of newly changed headings will be added once each week in the future.  NOTE: Authority Records updates posted after January 19, 2008 require Arial Unicode font to display all extended characters. Older entries require the ALA BT Courier font to display properly. Use Internet Explorer for best results when viewing the ALA BT Courier font.
