* Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program - SCCTP is a cooperative program that provides standardized training materials and trained trainers in the field of serials cataloging, through workshops sponsored by library associations, networks, and institutions.
This guide to cataloging using OCLC’s WorldCat database provides you with essential information on creating and using bibliographic records in WorldCat, including:
The fourth edition of Bibliographic Formats and Standards is the final edition available in print. The fourth edition will continue to be updated online and major revisions will be announced at Abstract & revision notes. Updates will be made available at Bibliographic Formats and Standards in PDF format so that holders of the fourth edition can keep their print copies up-to-date.
OCLC has launched a pilot to explore the feasibility of building a cooperatively created and maintained repository of copyright evidence. The WorldCat Copyright Evidence Registry (CER) is a community working together to build a union catalog of copyright evidence based on WorldCat metadata, additional information contributed by libraries and by other interested organizations.
Digitization projects continue for books in the public domain, but books whose copyright status is unknown are destined to remain in print and on shelves until their status can be determined. The process to determine copyright status can be lengthy and labor intensive. The goal of the Copyright Evidence Registry is to encourage a cooperative environment to discover, create and share copyright evidence through a collaboratively created and maintained database, using the WorldCat cooperative model to eliminate duplicate efforts.
The CER beta is searchable at http://www.worldcat.org/copyrightevidence. Those wishing to contribute data are invited to log in using their Connexion authorization or a WorldCat.org authorization. Please read the instructions carefully as you log in for the first time. Additional functionality will be available to formal pilot libraries later in the test through an assigned CER authorization. If you would like to participate in the pilot, please contact OCLC via the feedback form at http://www.worldcat.org/copyrightevidence/registry/feedback.
More information about the CER beta and the pilot can be found at http://www.oclc.org/us/en/productworks/cer.htm and at http://www.worldcat.org/copyrightevidence/registry/about.
The recent press release is available at http://www.oclc.org/us/en/news/releases/200832.htm.
OCLC has begun adding files of records for Chinese language materials from the China National Publishing Industry Trading Corporation (CNPITC). Founded in October 1980, CNPITC is one of China’s largest foreign trade enterprises in the national press and publishing industry. Its business covers the import and export of books, periodicals, newspapers, audio-visuals, electronic publications, and cultural products, among other things and is a leading supplier of Chinese publications to libraries worldwide. With main offices in Beijing, CNPITC also has branches in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In June 2002, CNPITC became the first ISO9001-2000 certified corporation within the Chinese press and publishing industry.
When a CNPITC record (OCLC symbol CNPIT) is added or matched to WorldCat, a 938 field is added to the MARC record that contains the vendor code CNPI. This code is indexed; vendor records are searchable in Connexion using the vendor index (Vendor (vn:) in the dropdown menu). Some examples of the records added to WorldCat from CNPITC are OCLC numbers: #233689268, # 233689410. Examples of records matched are: # 62335322, # 70139368
The records do contain Chinese characters, but are considered to be cataloged in English. No 040 subfield b is present, indicating English language cataloging. English language libraries may upgrade these records and add English language notes as they wish. There are 520 notes present that only contain Chinese characters, since CNPITC was not able to supply English summaries. This may be confusing, as it may appear that these records are hybrids of Chinese and English. However, the decision was made to retain these notes rather than to delete them, as they may provide a service to some using WorldCat.
For information in about CNPITC, see their web site at: http://www.cnpitc.com.cn/
For a list of all partners contributing records through the Vendor Record Contribution Program, see:

At PALINET Support today we received a question about the function shortcut keys for OCLC’s Connexion Client, so I thought it was a good opportunity to send a reminder about the template for the Connexion Client Function Keys.
Here is a template that you can print out and put over the keys on your keyboard: http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/connexion/client/gettingstarted/keyboardtemplate.pdf

Earlier this year, OCLC announced a pilot project to explore upstream metadata capture and metadata enhancement using publisher and vendor ONIX (Online Information Exchange) metadata. Here’s an overview of how the pilot is progressing and the next steps.
Between January and June 2008, OCLC:
Results thus far provide proof of concept that metadata can be created and enhanced through these processes.
Three pilot partners submitting approximately 1,000 ONIX records each:
One pilot partner submitting a larger data set:
During July and August, OCLC will wrap up the pilot and provide final statistics, pilot partner evaluations, case studies and recommendations for moving forward to library and publisher supply chain communities. OCLC welcomes input from both communities on new ways to think about cataloging and metadata creation in support of both library and publishing needs.
